In our opinion, South Shore Cultural Center is one of the most perfect wedding venues in Chicago for so many reasons. South Shore Cultural Center Chicago Wedding Venue

The Space

There are so many beautiful rooms in South Shore Cultural Center. Each one has a grand personality and beautiful architecture that we love.

The first space when you walk in is the main lobby called the Grand Foyer. This space really is a showstopper right when you walk into the venue. Your guests will come through this room to go to the ceremony or the cocktail hour/reception.

The Solarium is where most couples have their ceremony. We absolutely love the mosaic tile throughout the space, the Zodiac symbols on the ceiling, and the view of the lake. The Solarium is 66’ x 41’ and has a maximum capacity of 150 guests for a seated dinner reception and 300 guests for a theatre-style ceremony setup.

The Dining Room is where all the magic happens. This space is the grandest and most beautiful of them all with the colorful structures, mosaic tiles, and amazing chandeliers. We absolutely love the tall windows, the huge chandeliers, and the mosaic tile in this space as well. The Solarium is a much lighter space with mostly white and blue, but the pinks in the Dining Room with those whites and blues really add a pop of color and personality to the space that we love. The Dining Room is 110’ x 50’ has a maximum guest capacity of 300 for a seated dinner reception and 390 for a theatre-style setup.

The Dining Room foyer is often where guests will go for cocktail hour, however we have seen this spill into the lobby/Grand Foyer as well. The Dining Foyer is 31’ x 60’ and doesn’t have a guest capacity listed.

There are also two rooms that you can use for private wedding suites - The Oak Room and the Music Library. The Music Library is adorned with filled bookshelves that are great for photos, so this is a great spot for portraits before the wedding. The Oak Room is more of a moody, swanky meeting space that is good as a second holding area if you need to stay separated before the ceremony. The Music Library is 25’ x 40’ and has a maximum capacity of 20 guests for a seated dinner, and the Oak Room is 22’ x 41’ and has a maximum capacity of 50 guests for either a seated dinner or theatre-style setup.

There also is a theatre called the Paul Robeson Theatre, but this is an actual theatre that doesn’t get used much for weddings. The theatre has seating for up to 500 guests in the space as well, but this can be used for a reception if you love the look and feel of the theatre!

About South Shore Cultural Center

South Shore Cultural Center was founded in 1905 and rebuilt in 1916. The Chicago Park District has owned it since 1974 and restored as a historic, Chicago landmark in 2004. It is located in the South Shore community and spans 70.84 acres. The space is massive and great for large weddings, but also is used for parties, small conventions, after school programs, art classes, or other special events. They partner with a variety of organizations like Chicago Music Association, Chicago Symphony Orchestra, South Shore Opera Company, and more.

South Shore Cultural Center is known for the massive ballrooms, country club-like interiors (it was previously called South Shore Country Club), cascading chandeliers, and mosaic tile throughout the entire space. South Shore Cultural Center has a public, 9-hole golf course, lit tennis courts, beach and lake views, and an incredible restaurant inside that patrons love.

South Shore Cultural Center has a list of preferred vendors that you are required to choose from which can be found at the bottom of this page on their website.

One thing that our couples love about this space is that Barack and Michelle Obama had their wedding reception in this building in 1992! There is an iconic photo from their wedding where they are draped on a bench on the upstairs floor outside the Music Library that couples love to recreate on their wedding day.

With all Chicago Park District weddings, you are given 3 hours for setup at the venue. This is usually when your vendors arrive, so most couples begin their day at a getting ready location offsite for photos and come to the venue after they are dressed and ready. You are provided 1-2 wedding suites to store your personal items (they usually condense to 1 suite before the ceremony, so it’s important to get everyone’s belongings moved to either the Music Library or the Oak Room before the festivities begin.

Parking isn’t necessarily guaranteed for guests, but there is a large parking lot that you can purchase slots in advance if you would like to be on the safe side.

We do recommend dedicating some time before the ceremony to utilize the outdoor and indoor spaces for photos if possible. The grounds are beautiful with their foliage and greenery, the beach, and the tall pillars. Indoors, the main lobby/Grand Foyer, the Music Library, and the bench that the Obama’s have their iconic wedding photo are also coveted places to take your photos too.

The ceremony is typically held in the Solarium. The light, airy space with the natural light from the windows makes this a great place to get the day started. After the ceremony has concluded, guests will typically move to the Dining Foyer for cocktail hour, and you can have a breather to yourselves in the Music Library or the Oak Room. You can also have access in the park on the patio outside if you would like. If your ceremony is offsite, this space is perfect for hosting your cocktail hour to be the least amount of cramped as possible.

Cocktail hour in the Dining Foyer allows for an easy transition to the Dining Room for the reception. This space is large and in charge so it’s great for the dinner and dancing. You also don’t need a dance floor added either because the mosaic tile is the perfect setting to dance the night away! When the reception ends, you and your guests can head home or to a nearby hotel, and there is one hour for your vendors to clean up.

You can also host your reception in the Robeson Theatre if you love the idea of having a theatre for your reception. Some of our movie-buff couples think this is a cool, unique idea too!

Amenities

The building itself is enough of a reason to book South Shore Cultural Center for your wedding just because of how stunning it is, but here are some of the specific amenities included with your rental:

4-6 hour rental (plus 3 hours for setup and 1 hour for teardown)
Round tables (Rectangular, low cabaret, or high boys are an additional cost to rent)
Banquet chairs
Wedding suite to store personal items
Security

If you are also in need of additional power, you can rent generators for an additional cost (most weddings will not require this). If you would like the Chiavari chairs, the rental is $5 per chair. Parking can also be reserved by calling 312-951-0722. Additionally, if you would like to extend the end time past 10pm, it can be done at an additional rate.

Pricing

As of September 8, 2026, the pricing for the space is listed on their website along with their many customized wedding and event packages. The packages are not listed to have peak or off-season rates or any differences depending on the day of the week for wedding packages.

We mostly would see the Dining Room Wedding Package which is $6,010 that includes access to the Dining Room, Solarium, and Music Library, 6 hours of event time (plus 3 hours for setup and 1 hour for teardown), the refundable deposit, security, and maintenance fees.

There is also the Robeson Wedding Package which is $6,580 and includes access to the Robeson Theatre, Solarium, and Music Library, 6 hours of event time (plus 3 hours for setup and 1 hour for teardown), the refundable deposit, security, and maintenance fees.

The Premiere Lakeview Wedding Package is $7,890 and includes access to the Robeson Theatre, Solarium, Dining Room, and Music Library, 6 hours of event time (plus 3 hours for setup and 1 hour for teardown), the refundable deposit, security, and maintenance fees.

And the final package is the Event Package which is $11,830 and includes access to the Grand Foyer/lobby, Robeson Theatre, Solarium, Dining Room, Music Library, and additional rooms for event central, 6 hours of event time (plus 4 hours for setup and 2 hour for teardown), the refundable deposit, security, and maintenance fees.

As far as wedding venues in Chicago, this space is really a steal for the size that you would be getting. We absolutely recommend checking it out!

South Shore Cultural Center is a hidden gem in Chicago that we absolutely love. The space is beautiful inside and out and we know that couples that get married here are going to absolutely love the unique architecture and grandiose nature of the venue. Patrick and Aldair’s wedding was so beautiful and such a lovely time! They were really able to enjoy this slightly warm, 75-degree August day with their ceremony and reception at South Shore Cultural Center in Chicago. We provided day-of coordination to ensure everything ran as smoothly as possible and it was such a great time!

Aldair and Patrick really didn’t want to worry about when things were arriving, if everything was set up the way they envisioned, or if their groomsmen needed to do tasks to get everything in order. They really wanted to focus on the time they had with their family and friends so we took care of their details! Patrick and Aldair mentioned that their priorities were good food, the ceremony itself, and when everything settled and they got to have fun together.

Patrick and Aldair came to the South Shore Cultural Center together with their groomsmen to get ready - most of them spent the morning together until it was time to get dressed for the first look. Before anything really got started, we all had to take a break outside while the fire alarms went off due to a steamer - thankfully it was quick and didn’t really disrupt the day!

The wedding party was all together, including Patrick and Aldair, for most of the morning just hanging out. Once it was time to start getting ready though, they went into two separate rooms so they could get on their suits and have a first look with each other before the ceremony.

We really loved the two styles of boutonnieres, especially because the Bird of Paradise was so near and dear to Aldair’s heart and really showed off his love of plants and florals.

Aldair and Patrick shared their first look in the halls of the venue and got started with taking their couple’s portraits. They had plenty of time and didn’t really plan to do more than that for photos, so they had a lot of time to slowly take photos and not worry about the timeline while things were getting set and ready for the ceremony.

South Shore Cultural Center is the same building that Barrack and Michelle Obama got married in as they lived very close to the building, and they had an iconic photo on this bench that they had from their wedding that Patrick and Aldair recreated. We absolutely loved it!

The exterior of the building and the plants that they have in the area is really perfect for photos - it really transports you out of Illinois and into a more warm, tropical area, so we are glad that they got to get so many great photos with the beautiful architecture! As Aldair is also an architect by day, we know he appreciated the space too.

The ceremony was in the Solarium which was so stunning with all of the white tile and walls. On the ceiling, Patrick noted all of the Zodiac signs when we did our venue walkthrough and it truly was a beautiful space to have their wedding ceremony! We were blown away with Aldair’s vision with the florals and also his map he created himself of the ceremony seating and the whole venue for his guests!

The ceremony itself was bilingual with Aldair’s family member officiating. It was really nice to have a personal touch like that to include everyone in the ceremony, and it actually ran a few minutes quicker than we expected! The vows were really sweet and Patrick and Aldair had such a perfect start to the wedding day!

Cocktail hour was in a foyer right next to the grand dining hall, where they mingled and got started celebrating their love. Patrick and Aldair surely enjoyed their time and spent a good majority of their time at cocktail hour after formal photos and a moment alone in their suite with some drinks and appetizers. We recommend doing this for all of our couples that can because it really is a great way to soak it all in and be intentional before getting whisked into the quick evening.

The dining hall truly is something out of a fairytale, and Samuel our photographer for the day did an AMAZING job capturing the dreamy atmosphere that radiated in the whole space. We absolutely loved the architecture, extremely tall ceilings, and all of the color!! We don’t know if we have seen a more colorful venue but honestly it was such a beautiful space for a wedding. It really worked well with the florals that they had and it was so wonderful to get to see their vision all come together!

Aldair also had a great attention to detail and created the logos for the coffee favors of their dogs - of course we absolutely loved them and so did their guests! Even with the menus having the corgi clips that held their place cards - you can really tell all of the intentional details from start to finish! Once the cocktail hour was over, we got all of the guests seated for the grand entrance and then it was time for an amazing dinner from Food for Thought - the tacos were INCREDIBLE and everyone loved it!

Aldair and Patrick had many speeches in between dinner and dancing, but they were all so sweet and fun. We especially loved their personal thank you to so many of their guests specifically but also to everyone that was able to be a part of their wedding and celebrate with them.

After the speeches, Patrick and Aldair stepped outside for some photos. Again, you would have no idea that this was in Chicago, but the beach looked absolutely amazing!

They returned shortly after and did their cake cutting too. We loved seeing them enjoy their time together and doing all the things they hoped for their wedding day.

Thankfully, we were able to get the timeline on track after the speeches ran things a little behind for their first dances and opening up the dance floor. Patrick admits that he isn’t much of a dancer, but we did see him enjoy himself out there and they both got to mingle with a lot of their loved ones too!

Overall, Patrick and Aldair were SUCH a joy to get to work with for their wedding day. Everything turned out so beautifully and we could tell that both Aldair and Patrick had a lovely time soaking up their day with their family and friends - but more importantly, with each other. Our goal is always to make things as easy as possible for our couples, and Patrick and Aldair were able to really enjoy themselves! We are so thankful for all of our couples that trust us with their wedding day to make sure everything ran smoothly, and despite starting the day with a fire truck it ended up being smiles all day long!
